A new 20mph at city school near a city school has come into effect at the start of the new term

Leicester City Council has installed the traffic calming measures and 20mph speed limit on streets around Montrose School, in Aylestone, following consultation with local residents.

The scheme has built on the existing traffic calming measures on Wigston Lane, and extends to dozens of nearby residential streets bordered by Glenhills Way to the south and Aylestone Road to the west, as well as streets south of Duncan Road and west of Saffron Lane.

It now links up with existing zones around Marriott Primary School, and Granby Primary School.

Existing traffic calming measures on Wigston Lane have been added to, with additional central islands and speed humps further along the road, as well as new speed cushions in Aylestone Drive and Milligan Road, Burnaston Road, Alton Road and Belvoir Drive East.

The scheme has cost about £64,000 from the city council’s Transport Improvement Works Programme 2018/19.

Headteacher at Montrose School, Andy Owens, said: “As a school we are pleased to see a reduction in the speed limit in the area around school as it should help make the journey to and from school safer for our children and families.”

Consultations with local residents and businesses saw 74 percent of people were in favour of a 20mph limit, with 57 percent backing the installation of traffic calming measures.

Leicester City Council is rolling out a programme of 20mph zones in communities and near schools, where requested by residents. The work is designed to encourage more cycling and walking to school by helping make streets safer for all users.
